Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I just started reading John's book Looking for Alaska and I'm literally devastated by reading Alaska died. Like..I don't even know if I can finish the book. I read a page or two afterwards but the constant reminder of her death is a lump in my throat. Anyone else feel devastated when she died..and please don't put in spoilers for me because I haven't finished the book yet and if I can I don't want to know whats coming up. Thanks

Yes.  I cried a lot.  But it is very, very satisfying in the end.  But it results in more crying.

I also cried.  Like, had to go get the tissue box and continue reading type of crying.

I felt the same way. I think it speaks to what an amazing writing John is that he could create a fictional character out of his own head that we were devastated to lose. I agree that you should keep reading. Anytime you have to deal with someone's death, it helps to go through the grieving process with other people, and the rest of the characters in the book felt just as strongly about Alaska as all of us readers did, so you can go through the grieving process along with them.

Yeah. I was in the middle of my school's library when I got to that part.
I bet people thought I was psycho or something, because I didn't stop sobbing for another fifty pages or so.
Looking For Alaska is one of the saddest books I've ever read. It's also one of the best. Just one more reason I'm so happy I found Brotherhood 2.0, because if I hadn't I don't know if I ever would have heard of John Green.

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

i loved the book...my mom read it first and told me I would hate it, since she loved it.  I read it and told her how much I loved it and she was blown away...looking for Alaska is the best of John's books...I cried, at least a bit.  And i'm a guy...weird.  But, the essay at the end was AMAZING!  I can't believe John wrote that...but, then again, hes made of awesome...so, yeah.  Anyway, 10 out of 5.  Looking for Alaska is amazing...

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I just finished Looking for Alaska, and I couldn't put it down. But the second I read that Alaska was leaving, I knew she wasn't coming back. I cried, and the rest of the pages seemed so empty without her. That isn't supposed to sound negative; the whole book was spectacular, but there was a noticeable void without Alaska. Pudge and the Colonel were desperately trying to fill it by answering the how and the what and the why of her death.

Oh, such a great read.

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I read Looking For Alaska before B2.0, so I'm excited to read it again once the brotherhood is over. I think it will be different now that I know what John sounds like and how he acts. ha ha, maybe you know what I mean.

It was really a great book. And yes, it was really sad. That just made it more real, and the way everyone dealt with the loss was so interesting. We read it for book club at my school, which was so jokes. Can't wait to re-read with this new perspective.

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I lent Looking for Alaska to basically everyone I know, and every single one of them cried.
My favourite response to it was when I lent it to my friend this summer, and she was meeting me after work. I came outside and she was sitting there on this bench bawling her eyes out and she was like YOU GAVE ME A STUPID COMING OF AGE BOOK ABOUT A NERDY BOY WHO THINKS BOARDING SCHOOL WILL MAKE HIS LIFE BETTER AND I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN AND ALASKA JUST DIED AND I'M CRYING IN PUBLIC AND YOU BETTER BUY ME ICECREAM RIGHT NOW.
And everyone around us was like "oh god don't make eye contact with the crazy people!"

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I think what really hit me was the funeral. Especially the part where Miles knelt at the casket...

I felt the Colonel's small hands on my shoulders, and a tear dripped onto my head, and for a few moments, it was just the three of us--the buses of students hadn't arrived, and Takumi and Lara had faded away, and it was just the three of us--three bodies and two people...

That whole paragraph and scene really got me, but that part especially. :[ I don't normally cry over books. D:

I don't know if it's just me but when I read John's book it is his voice in my head reading the words. Anyways.....I loved the character Alaska and it did feel empty when she died but as the book says life must go on.

I would have to say Looking for Alaska is one of the best books I have ever read.

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

i read an abundance of katherines over the summer and had been wanting to read looking for alaska but never got around to it. i finally got to the library today and checked it out at around noon and was done before 5:00 this afternoon. i just couldn't put it down it was such a page turner. theres no doubt it was sad but i have just fallen in love with the way john writes his books. i get so attached to his characters its crazy. anyway it just makes it that much harder for paper towns haha. i will definitely be recommending not only looking for alaska but all of john's books to all of my friends.

I had John's voice in my head while reading the book, too! It's odd--from watching B2.0, John is probably the writer I know best outside of his books. (Odd in a neat way, for sure.)

I actually have a heart of ice, so I wasn't really affected while Alaska died. Honestly, I preferred the other characters in the book. They seemed much more real to me. Alaska's character bothered me a little, but I enjoyed the emotional journey others went through after her death. (The Colonel even gets angry and calls her self-centered, a point I'm glad was brought up.)

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

Oh God, I just finished reading it. I don't think I've been so devastated by the death of a literary character before. The "before" section of the book was filled with so much happiness, it was so nice to read. I prayed that the counting down of the days did not herald doom...but we all know it did.

The "after" section, well, I practically felt part of Pudge and the Colonel's grieving. I was genuinely sad that Alaska was gone. Pudge and the Colonel's sadness seemed so real. The ending in itself was so sad as well, but in an optimistic way, which I liked.

A very good read, John. big_smile

Definately! I knew that she had to be dead, but I couldn't help thinking that Pudge and the Colonel will find out that it's not real, because she just can't be!

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I'm not much of a crier over fictional characters. I've only cried while reading 3 books, A Walk to Remember, Harry Potter 6, and Harry Potter 7.  But when I read about Alaska's death, I was bawling! And I had to stay up insanely late to finish the entire book which resulted in even more tears.

That book touched my heart so much and has just entered the list of my favorite books of all times.

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I did feel very sad when Alaska died, but I felt more shock than sadness at the time of her actual death. I did finally get choked up when Mr. Hyde wrote her question on the board though. I'm not sure why that part got to me, but it did.

The book is sad at parts, but it is a great book. Truly, one of the best I've ever read.

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I looooved the book, though I would probably have liked it more if I had been able to read it in english (I could only get it in spanish here in Mexico) but still, I started crying so bad when she died... and it was kind of worse because I read it yesterday and today a year ago a friend of mine died... so I was sad, but the book helped a lot.

Re: Looking For Alaska - Devastation *a spoiler for those who havent read*

I hoped the entire beginning of the book that the before and after was for the super prank they were playing,  but I obviously figured it out by the time it was a few days before it happened >< I cried and I never cry for books.

(Oddly enough, thats what convinced one of my friends to read it, since well...it has to be good if it made me cry?)
