so when i was taught the game, i was told that the only way to win is to get on national television and say " i win the game" ... has anyone else heard that?

Oh, I hope that's true! I've never heard that before, though. I kinda figured the only way to win was to forget about it until you die. So I guess in my version, sixty or seventy years from now there'll be people winning the game all over the place.

As soon as you hear about The Game, you are playing. You do not get a choice.
That would defeat the entire purpose-- to get everyone on Earth playing!
The rules on www.losethegame.com clearly say "You are playing the game."

But a few days ago, the kid who does the announcements on the loudspeaker at my school finished with "I just lost the game." He didn't forget to be awesome.
